Steps Toward Personal Financial Triumph
Don't Fall For The Hype!
As an intelligent and dollar conscious person, you should think carefully before you make a purchasing decision. Using that as a guide, you should be able to avoid falling into many of the traps set by misleading marketers and business persons.
Review is a constant in this course. Always check your notes from earlier classes. It will enable you to blend in everything more easily.
When businesses feel the need to do so, they make use of
a lot of hype. Don't fall for it. Free flying miles, gift certificates,
bonus points, purchasing points, drawings for a million dollars
or a years worth of groceries ("the more you use your card
the greater your chance of winning"), free gas, free telephone
calling cards, etc., etc., etc.; THEY ARE ALL GIMMICKS. Don't
fall for them!
The only purchasing "deal" that is worth your
attention is a low price. If you need a good or service and a
business gives you a deal in the form of an on the spot dollars
and cents discount, take it [provided you can't get a better deal
somewhere else]. Otherwise, stick to your purchasing plan. The
money you spend trying to earn something with bonus points will
generate a strain on your budget. As a matter of fact, after all
things have been considered, you would save money if you straight
up bought whatever they offer as a reward instead of "earning"
it through one of their rip off bonus points programs. Why? (1)
Because those gimmicks motivate you purchase more than you would
normally purchase and (2) The interest you pay appreciably increases
your debt load. You should not want that.

Remember: Business do not operate because they are concerned
about saving you money. Businesses want every penny of your money,
and they are not developing policies or advertising "specials"
because they want to make sure you get your money's worth. If
a business advertises or promotes a sales campaign, it is because
they want to get your money.
Every promotion or sales program costs a business money.
Businesses have to pay people to think of sales approaches, pay
ad people to develop them and pay radio and other media people
to get them out to the public. Businesses are not going to incur
these type expenses because they are concerned about you. What
they are concerned about is getting your money. It is your responsibility
to get every penny's worth of your money's value when you give
it to them for a good or service. If you fall for the hype, you
will never get your money's worth.
