Read the essay below. Afterwards,
try to get the best understanding you can of the following questions.
(1) White America's "goodies" help keep Black People
powerless and economically vulnerable. Do you agree?
(2) Why do you think Black People are so attached to white America's
"goodies."
(3) Black People have done without white America's "goodies"
before. In your opinion, were Black People better off or worse
off then?
(4) What "goodies" would you be willing to do without
in order to help implement a Black Power Economic system?
Class #13: WE CAN DO WITHOUT THE GOODIES [Audio Version]
Economics is a science; an organized system of activities (some economic systems are more highly organized than others) as opposed to a random series of activities. In this class, we will explore the Black psyche and try to help Us realize that "We Can Do Without The Goodies."
We Can Do Without The Goodies
Black People made it in this country
for hundreds of years without having decent jobs and adequate
incomes. If We had continued along that early course, We would
presently be in a better position to achieve Our Black economic
objectives. Unfortunately, We have developed an artificial attachment
to the meaningless but expensive images and trinkets that white
America has planted in Our minds and emotions. That attachment
keeps Us playing the roles white America wants Us to play, and
stagnates Our economic and political development.
White America's goodies are like dope; they give Us a sinister
and harmful high and make Us feel like We can't live without them
when, in fact, the best thing We can do for Ourselves is live
without them. The problem is that some of Us have become so indoctrinated
to whiteness that they don't want to do without those goodies.
If you are one of those type individuals, you have been and will
continue to be the source of much of Our frustration!
But there is hope and promise. Why? Because if you were one of
those type individuals, you probably would not be exploring this
material or taking this course. More than likely, you can be part
of the solution We need. You can make the necessary adjustment
and do without a large number of white America's goodies. You
can start preparing yourself for a new set of economic and political
values and priorities, and contribute to the development of an
independent Black Power Economic reality.
